Over the years we have developed several projects that continue to live on through the application of the tools and practices tested during our educational activities. Each completed initiative has left a mark, helping to build our experience and enriching the way we propose Regenerative Outdoor today. These projects represent the foundation on which we continue to innovate, advancing values of sustainability, well-being and personal growth. Be.Ci.S

Be.Ci.S. is a scientific project that Outdoor Portofino e IoTopon Ltd. are carrying out thanks to the support of RAISE Liguria, for the realization and validation of an innovative sensor that allows, in an accessible way to everyone, to monitor the environment thanks to the collection of data related to environmental parameters.

BIVIOS provides data on changes in environmental changes in bivalve farms, focusing on physical factors such as the input of sediment-containing waters to the farms and movements of seafloor sediments.

The goal is to use mathematical models, based on historical and satellite data as well as direct observations (or measurement campaigns), to identify the data needed to support the mitigation of adverse effects on shellfish farming, and to develop a range of information services and best-practice recommendations for shellfish farm managers.

The SIRENS project develops innovative and sustainable strategies for the restoration of native algae and aquatic plants that are essential to the health of marine and lake ecosystems . Active in three Italian pilot sites (Venice Lagoon, Lake Garda, Taranto’s Mar Piccolo), SIRENS applies advanced propagation, transplanting and monitoring techniques to restore habitats threatened by human impacts and climate change. By involving researchers, public agencies and local communities, the project promotes collaboration between science and society and raises awareness of the importance of protecting these environments. SIRENS thus contributes to the conservation of biodiversity and the resilience of Italian aquatic ecosystems.

Growing citizen science

Project OutBe: Pavilion for People, is an initiative that was created with the goal of bringing a shared message to the United Nations Ocean Conference. The common thread of the initiative is the role of women working for the ocean, with a focus on sports, research, communication, policy, innovation, gender equality and the arts.

This Project has indirectly received funding from the European Commission’s SMP program, via a call for proposals issued and executed under the BEFuture project (Grant Agreement No 101121580)

Cleanup Research and Action for Biodiversity and Conservation

The CRABS project – Cleanup Research and Action for Biodiversity and Preservation – has seen us engaged with Outdoor Portofino in an environmental awareness and citizen science initiative.

The goal of the project, supported and funded by The North Face, was to select and train a community of outdoor marine activity enthusiasts to carry out marine conservation actions in the Portofino Marine Protected Area.

Navigation support

The Sindbad project has created a web-based platform for the delivery of customized services to support professional shipping (fishing, aquaculture, local maritime transport) and in general to all sea operators, with the aim of ensuring the safety of those working on board and improving the efficiency of operations. OutBe as Outdoor Portofino has contributed by testing and developing participatory oceanographic monitoring protocols to increase the flow of data on the platform.

Micro Plastic Hunters

In collaboration with the CNR IAS for the Micro Plastic Hunters project, at Outdoor Portofino we developed and tested a protocol for monitoring microplastics via kayak, with the aim of assessing pollution in coastal areas that are often overlooked by traditional oceanographic surveys. We recently tested for the first time at sea mini-mante, within our CRABS project.

A pilot project in which, in collaboration with OENgineering and ETT Genova, the oceanographic data monitoring sensor (BRIZO) was co-designed and tested. The sensor can be deployed and used on water sports equipment.

Blue of Genoa

Another project that involved us at Outdoor Portofino in local citizen science activities is Blu di Genova. Thanks for the support of Blue District of Genoa and in collaboration with the Coast Guard Auxiliary, the CNR IAS, l’University of Genoa DISTAV and DICCA, Marevivo and the Naval League, we led locals, tourists and sportsmen to discover the rocky coast of Nervi and contribute to scientific research.

Completed projects

City Nature Challenge

In 2021, the international bioblitz City Nature Challenge also came to Italy in a new marine format, inviting cities to compete for the most citizen science observations of the natural world. Outdoor Portofino participated in the challenge as a local Portofino node, inviting locals and tourists to upload biological observations above and below the sea, on the our iNaturalist project.

The the project stems from the need within water sports to protect the marine environment in which they take place, by actively contributing to ocean stewardship and ensuring environmental sustainability. Four water sports were selected—sailing, diving, canoe-kayak, and swimming—each practiced by a member of the partnership, which brings together four organizations from Spain, Italy, Croatia, and Greece.
Funded by the European Program Erasmus-ERASMUS-SPORT-2023-SSCP

As part of the project, OP is responsible for producing photo and video content for the online platform, highlighting environmentally sustainable sports practices by engaging amateur athletes, athletes with developmental disabilities, and students. Through these collaborations, Sporocean promotesinclusivity and sharedenvironmental responsibility by creating a dynamic digital platform to develop and apply sustainable solutions in the water sports arena.
